During an a graphic design elective, Alternative Design Approaches, I was able to explore a multitude of new techniques focused on more explorative design methods. During one of the course projects, we had to explore the fusion between art and text. This would seem simple to a designer but thinking beyond the contemporary understanding of this idea was an initial challenge.
Landing on the idea to paint something I naturally found hand-painted signs to be very inspiring and something I wanted to learn more about. After a good amount of contextual research on this once vibrant career and craft, I was able to grasp techniques used to make a hand-painted sign.
The process video I shoot and quickly chopped together gives a more in-depth look at the process. Things like reversed acetone transfers and brush strokes are not something I initially anticipated learning but in the end has given me a reverence for this very skillful way of graphically designing something.
